Besiktas win 5-0 and get flying
Monday, Sep 29, 2003
Besiktas warmed up for our UEFA Champions League match last night with a 5-0 thrashing of fourth placed Trabzonspor to keep them three points clear at the top of the Turkish League.
After seven games, they’ve won six and drawn one. That’s no easy matter. Galatasaray have won four, drawn two and lost one. Besiktas are the champions of Turkey and the in-form team.
International striker Ilhan Mansiz, who got three World Cup goals for Turkey, has returned from injury and got two of the first three. Ahmed Hassan is their supersub – he set up Ilhan Mansiz’ goal at second placed Istanbulspor last week in the 1-1 draw, and came off the bench last night to score the last two.
The team is travelling to London today ahead of Wednesday’s match with us.
The one blip on their season so far has been their Champions League defeat at home to Lazio. Jaap Stam and Stefan Fiore got a goal in each half in their 2-0 loss. But Besiktas had forward fitness problems that day which Ilhan Mansiz, now flying again after knee surgery, has gone some way to solving.
They know if they can get any kind of a result at Stamford Bridge that their Champions League campaign is still alive.
